Sunday 17 November
Kilbourn Park, Chicago, IL - 12pm - 2 Hours
Caitlin KellyThompson
Come and join us as we explore composition in photography.

Composition is one of the most critical element in photography. Composition is how a photographer arranges the visual elements within their image, frame. I promise you that if you search for information on composition you will find plenty You will find formal rules, opinion, some of which you can trace back to historical art movements and painters.

Even in the digital world, composition remains the key to creating strong images. Composition is what guides our eye through an image and gives importance to the subject. It creates the story for the viewer and how we as photographers convey that message.

This meetup will explore composition using our frame and tools available to us as the photographer.

I recently joined the Chicago photography group led by Cait and had the chance to participate in a night street photography event with her. The experience was amazing! Cait is not only incredibly knowledgeable but also very approachable, making it easy for everyone to learn and grow regardless of their skill level. She guided us through different techniques for capturing the essence of the city at night, from playing with shadows and lights to capturing motion. I came away with some fantastic shots and a deeper appreciation for night photography. Highly recommend joining Cait?s events if you want to elevate your photography skills

My wife and I went to Lincoln Park Zoo to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We were walking around the bird exhibit, specifically the open flight area when this adorable gray bird landed on the railing and modeled for me. This bird allowed me to take his picture for almost 10 minutes before he flew away. Editing includes Adobe Lightroom to adjust some exposure and contrast but otherwise it is as shot. February 2017. Grackles fighting over food. My wife has had bird feeders up in the backyard for years and she's always hated the grackles for chasing other birds away from her feeders. I was trying out a recently purchased used 100-400 Canon Telephoto on a new 7D MkII in the backyard when I caught this scuffle between birds over the bird feeder. I tried to find the RAW file but over the years, it's been lost. We bought the camera gear because I was taking pictures of my son's swimmi

This photo will always remind me of one of the craziest dives of my life. The boat was being thrashed about by the waves. The divemaster had us sit on the edge and said, "When I count to 3, you go and drop fast. If you don't go on 3, you don't go. If you don't drop fast, a wave will drop the boat back on your head." This trip had many of the 'bests' of my diving experience and encourage anyone who gets the chance to go to get a good dive camera. It will be worth it!!

There wasn't anything particularly striking at first, but I noticed the distinct shadows cast by the buildings and how a lone pedestrian was walking into the light. To capture that contrast, I set a low exposure (1/2500) and used an aperture of f2.5. Afterward, I adjusted the light settings in Lightroom to accentuate the stark contrast between light and shadow, emphasizing the mood of the scene.
